The GLEC Framework Is Now an ISO Standard — and It Changes Everything

The logistics sector is responsible for over one-third of global CO₂ emissions. Yet until now, calculating those emissions consistently has been one of the industry’s biggest challenges.
This is why the announcement from Smart Freight Centre (SFC) marks a major turning point: The GLEC Framework — already the leading global method for freight emissions calculation — is now the foundation of the new ISO 14083 standard. This development represents a milestone for the entire logistics and transport sector.
Why This Matters
For years, companies, governments, and investors used different methods to calculate logistics emissions. This resulted in inconsistent reporting, difficulty in comparison, and slower progress toward decarbonisation.
ISO 14083 changes this by providing:
• One global standard for calculating and reporting logistics emissions• A trusted, science-based method aligned with the GLEC Framework• A tool recognised by regulators, investors, and industry leaders• A significant improvement in transparency, comparability, and credibility
Organisations no longer need to create their own calculation methods. A single, universally accepted standard is now available.
What ISO 14083 Includes
ISO 14083 provides a harmonized methodology for quantifying GHG emissions across all transport modes, including road, rail, air, maritime, and inland waterways.
It also includes:
• Mode-specific guidelines and emission factors• Practical calculation examples• Full alignment with the GLEC Framework• Compatibility with digital tools accredited by Smart Freight Centre
In parallel, SFC is introducing a Conformity Assessment Scheme to ensure high-quality, verified GHG reporting.
What This Means for ARXAX
ARXAX already aligns with the GLEC Framework and holds SFC accreditation. The transition to ISO 14083 enhances the value and impact of the emissions reporting we provide.
Our customers benefit from:
• Certified, internationally recognised emissions data• Easier, more transparent compliance with emerging regulations• Enhanced carbon reporting through the ARXAX Smart module• Stronger capabilities to meet 2030 climate targets
This ISO milestone validates the work the sector — and companies like ARXAX — have been advancing for years.
What Comes Next
The upcoming GLEC Framework 3.0, fully aligned with ISO 14083, will further strengthen consistency and global adoption.
This signals a new era for freight decarbonisation, characterised by standardized methods, consistent reporting, and stronger climate action.
Unified standards are essential to driving the momentum needed for meaningful emissions reduction across global supply chains.
